Have you ever bought Aba-made shoes before? This i Have you ever bought Aba-made shoes before? This is where they are made!

📍This is Shoe Plaza in Ariaria International Market.

You can find pretty sturdy footwear at unbelievable prices. The first time I got custom made mules here, I felt like a thief until I found out that I wasn’t really these people’s target customer.😂

Shoemakers at Shoe Plaza make shoes for both local and international wholesalers and suppliers. So, my N800 would neither send them back to the village nor make them rich.

The first pair of palms I bought here was sold to me at N600. This time around, I bought the design I was holding in the video at N800. And the two are still very much intact.

I don share update.😂
If you know about the Aba Women Riot that took pla If you know about the Aba Women Riot that took place in 1929, then this Mock Grave should ring a bell.

Let me share a little story with you 👇🏼

In November and December 1929, over 25,000 women from South-Eastern Nigeria marched in protest against an enforced and exploitative British colonial policy of taxation, and against patriarchal legal structures.

During the protest, at least 50 women were killed, and some others were injured.

In the end, some of the warrants chiefs resigned their positions and colonial authorities dropped their plans to impose taxes on the market women. The Aba women riots took the government months to suppress and it became a historic feminist movement and a story of strength and courage.

A Mock Grave was built to honor the women who lost their lives during the protest. It is called “Mock” Grave because no one was actually buried in it.

📍The Mock Grave is located in Ikot Abasi LGA of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, where the protest took place.

I know I speak for many when I say that people who I know I speak for many when I say that people who travel a lot or love to travel do not always have money like that. They just set priorities.

So, don’t be assuming they have an overflowing bank account.💀
One of the places I visited in Akwa Ibom was the W One of the places I visited in Akwa Ibom was the Women War Memorial Museum. This museum houses sculptures and paintings which tell stories of the women’s war and the history of the people in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

Back in 1929, a protest broke out in Ikot Abasi. This protest comprised women from six ethnic groups: Ibibio, Andoni, Orgoni, Bonny, Opobo, and Igbo. It was coordinated by the indigenous women of Owerri and Calabar provinces. The cause of this movement was due to the worry that a new taxation plan was being implemented that would demand women, most especially widows, to pay taxes which they were not mandated to pay earlier on.

The protest consequently led to shootings which claimed at least 50 women’s lives and left 50 others severely wounded.

Inside the memorial, there is a roll call of women who died during the protests, along with sculptures and paintings that tell this story. Outside, there is this statue depicting a notable fighter who wrestled and seized a gun from one of the policemen and broke it into two.

The museum was like nothing I’ve ever seen before and served as a reminder of the bravery and resilience of these women.

Upon entry, we paid an entry fee of N500 (per person) to the attendant who also doubled as our tour guide.

Do visit when next you are in Akwa Ibom.

📍Women War Memorial is located in Ikot Abasi L.G.A, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

This is Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom. Someone made a req This is Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom.

Someone made a request on TikTok that I share more details about the places I visited in Ikot Abasi, and it was only then that I realized I barely shared any stories from my visit here.

So in the coming days, I will be talking about the places I explored in Ikot Abasi, the history, how to get there, and how much a tour costs. We’ll just call it a mini guide to Ikot Abasi.

This LGA is historic, serene, and beautiful, and I’d like for you to see and experience it too; whether on your own, or through me.

I’ll see you on the other sides.
